Volvo grants free access to 40 years of car safety studies

To celebrate its anniversary, Volvo has opened free public access to its knowledge database containing results of car safety studies conducted over the past four decades. The Swedish marque believes its initiative will contribute to overall driver and passenger safety in all types of motorized vehicles.

The manufacturer has pointed out that most car companies nowadays tend to release new cars based on crash tests involving “male” test dummies. However, as internal research of Volvo Cars has found out, the injuries received in traffic accidents are often gender-specific. For instance, some women are actually more susceptible to whiplash injuries due to their body proportions. In order to prevent these from happening, the Swedish company has come up with a new contour seat design that it claims offers equal protection for both men and women.

To reduce the risk of chest injuries, Volvo has reinforced the lateral bodywork of its cars and even introduced side airbags, which reportedly led to a 50 percent reduction in dangerous injuries.

Among other things, the company plans to fit its cars based on the SPA2 chassis with cameras monitoring the physiological condition of the driver. Whenever the system detects an abnormality, it will automatically decelerate and park the car.
