Daimler unveils new AMG 45 engine

Daimler AG has come out with a new engine design intended for the company’s AMG 45 line of vehicles. The turbocharged, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder unit known as the M139 will replace its outdated counterpart, the M133. The company proudly claims that this is ‘the world’s most powerful mass-produced four-cylinder engine.’ Production will take place at an AMG factory in Affalterbach, Germany.

Despite being identical to its predecessor model in terms of basic geometry, the M139 boasts a number of improvements. For one, its air inlet is located on the radiator side, while the turbine charger and the exhaust manifold are at the rear side. This configuration should improve air intake efficiency and engine bay cooling.

For another, the turbine charger is also new, sporting a dual-volute casing that reduces the turbo lag effect. Further enhancements include a direct/indirect injection combo and a new cylinder/piston assembly made of aluminum.

The M139 has two native operation modes. One comes rated at 387 horsepower (289 kilowatts) along with 480 Newton-meters (354 pound-feet) of torque. The other one promises 421 hp (314 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb×ft) of torque. The maximum RPM is 7,200. To put things into perspective, the old M133 yielded 381 hp (284 kW) and 475 Nm (350 lb×ft).
