Espied: Next-gen Audi A3 running final pre-production tests

The next generation of the Audi A3 will arrive by the end of this year based on the up-to-date MQB architecture and tech of the VW Golf Mk8. As such, it will be available with a selection of hybrid drivetrains, including mild-hybrid ones based on 12V and 48V starter-generators. There will be no all-electric version, though; instead, Audi intends to build a standalone EV with A3-like specs.

Based on the latest spy shots made in the Alps, the company is now running final pre-production tests of the fourth-gen A3. Its design looks partly inspired by the Audi A4 and the Audi Q3 Sportback, and the dimensions are slightly larger this time around.

The test mule depicted here has an inscription that says ‘Bremsen Test’, which means that the manufacturer uses it to test brake mechanisms. The unusual tire design is another indication in favor of this guess.

The hatchback version will be the first to arrive on the market, followed by the sedan/saloon next year and the convertible even later than that. There will be no 3-door body variant, but there will be new 4-door coupe and liftback versions. The performance models – namely, the Audi S3 and RS 3 – will also join the range eventually, based on the Mercedes-AMG A 35 and A 45 tech, respectively.
