Audi’s biggest performance SUV spied testing

Audi has begun testing a performance version of its Q9 SUV envisioned as a competitor of the BMW X7 and the Mercedes-Benz GLS. Carscoops, which posted the spy shots, believes that this model will be called SQ9. The engine options and the availability date remain unannounced.

The entire body is clad in camo – even the Audi emblems are draped over. You can still discern the characteristic radiator grille outlines, distinct bumpers and slim lights. Two pairs of tailpipes at the rear end prompt the assumption that it’s not a regular Q9, but an S version.

Chances are good that Audi will equip the SQ9 with the 4.0-liter V8 engine a different modification of which powers the Lamborghini Urus. All other versions of the SUV will likely be electrified to some extent.

Company representatives confirmed a while ago that the largest Audi crossover so far was underway to the market in order to help the automaker fill a new niche it had never claimed before. The SQ9 is expected to arrive in around two years’ time, targeting North America and China as its two key markets.
