Nissan & Mitsubishi update their Kei microvan offerings

The Mitsubishi Delica Mini only debuted a couple of years ago, but the company saw it fit for a facelift. The much older, but technically related Mitsubishi eK Space and Nissan Roox have followed suit.

All three Kei microvans are produced by Nissan Mitsubishi Kei Vehicle (NMKV), so they have much in common. The platform stays unchanged, so all three are 3,395 mm (132.6 inches) long and 1,475 mm (57.6 inches) wide. The interiors have been considerably freshened up, as you can see in the gallery above. However, it’s inside that the biggest changes were made.

For starters, the dashboard has been redesigned from scratch. Rather than accommodating a digital gauge cluster and an infotainment display in separate niches, it now has a 7-inch digital dash mounted next to a 12.3-inch central display. The resulting touchscreen is advertised as the biggest-in-class, but it seems to be optional. Full details remain to be revealed, but both Mitsubishi models come with a 9-inch standard display in the middle. The HVAC touchscreen panel is also a paid option.

On the digital side of things, customers can look forward to state-of-the-art safety aids and connected services. The Nissan Roox now comes with a transparent hood feature to complement its surround cameras. For the first time on record, all three benefit from an added NissanConnect package with built-in Google services. If you opt for a dash cam, you will be able to use a feature called Remote Photo Shot to track your vehicle from a smartphone app.

Despite the old platform, all three Kei vans now have 2,315 mm (90.4 inches) of interior space. That’s 115 mm (4.5 inches) of added legroom. According to Nissan, the sliding doors open to reveal a doorframe 650 mm (25.4 inches) wide, which it claims is also best-in-class. The same goes for the trunk length of 675 mm (26.4 inches): it should fit four 48-liter suitcases, the automaker claims. If something doesn’t squeeze in, you can push both rear seats or just one up to 320 mm (12.5 inches) forward.

Last but not least, the Delica Mini now rides on Kayaba Prosmooth shock absorbers.

The new Mitsubishis will reach the Japanese domestic market in the fall, with the Nissan Roox scheduled to follow them at the end of the year.
