Peugeot 208 GTi reborn as an electric car

As promised, Peugeot has brought back its GTi performance lineup – but the first entry runs on batteries alone.

The compact-sized Peugeot E-208 GTi hatchback follows the same broad design principle as other “sporty” Stellantis EVs. Think Abarth 600e, Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce or Lancia Ypsilon HF for a good idea of what to expect. On the outside, it boasts a special body kit including a front splitter, a rear diffuser and a larger tailgate spoiler, as well as flared fenders. The track is 56 mm (2.2 inches) wider at the front and 27 mm (1.1 inches) wider at the back for added stability in corners, while the ground clearance is 30 mm (1.2 inches) lower than standard.

The electric model 208 rides on special 18-inch wheels shod in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2, a nod to the classical 205 GTi model from the 1980s. Openings in the disc-like wheels help four-piston brake calipers and their 355mm (13.87-inch) rotors receive adequate cooling, Peugeot claims.

Although the drive stays on the front axle, the electric 208 E-GTi is a sportier ride than its traditional counterpart thanks to 280 PS (276 hp / 206 kW) and 345 Nm (254 lb-ft) of torque heading for the wheels. A limited-slip differential integrated in the reduction gear improves handling, and reaching 100 km/h (62 mph) is a matter of only 5.7 seconds. The top speed is capped at 180 km/h (112 mph).

With a standard 54-kWh CATL battery pack, the EV has 350 kilometers (217 miles) of WLTP range per charge. The manufacturer points out improved battery cooling that should keep it within its normal operating conditions under sustained high loads. For its own part, the Peugeot Sport division mentions making numerous suspension and steering adjustments to make the experience as driver-focused as it can be. There is even a dedicated sports mode that switches off all electronic assists.

The interior is awash with sporty red accents and houses nice bucket seats with integrated headrests (front row only). Top trim level is the only one being released, so expect it to rock an upper-premium price tag.
