Ferrari chooses to stick to gasoline cars for now

How important is it for a luxury car manufacturer to electrify its lineup? According to Ferrari CEO Loius T. Camilleri, not that important at all. The 65-year-old executive believes that most Modena-made supercars should stay gas-powered for the rest of his life.

This isn’t to say Ferrari isn’t working on such vehicles: a two-seater armed with four motorized wheels is already in development, but it will not debut until at least five years later. Camilleri claims the current battery tech isn’t quite adequate right now: the batteries take too long to charge and offer too little in terms of driving range.

The Prancing Horse already has the SF90 Stradale PHEV on its lineup, which you can have a closer look at in our gallery and the video. Its hybrid powertrain consists of a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and triple electric motors, resulting in around 1,000 hp (745 kW) hitting the wheels. The supercar zaps from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.5 seconds and tops out at 340 km/h (211 mph). Ferrari is working on a similar vehicle based on a V6, but the details remain unknown.
