2026 Opel Astra hybrid gets DCT and more power

Stellantis has unveiled the new Opel Astra hatchback and wagon lineup for Europe. All hybrid cars now have considerably more power and range and benefit from a dual-clutch transmission while remaining at the same price point.

The electric motor now outputs 125 PS (123 hp / 92 kW) instead of 110 PS (108 hp / 81 kW). The battery pack stores 17.2 kWh instead of 12.4, so the cars now travel up to 83 km (51 miles) on electricity alone instead of just 57 km (35 miles).

Both the Astra Plug-in Hybrid hatchback and the Astra Sports Tourer Plug-in Hybrid wagon use a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine alongside the e-motor mentioned above. On its own, the engine outputs 150 PS (148 hp / 112 kW), but the combined power doesn’t exceed 196 PS (193 hp / 144 kW). It’s still around 16 horsepower (12 kilowatts) better than before the facelift, though. The torque stays capped at its usual 360 Nm (266 lb-ft).

Opel claims that the new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission fits the hybrid powertrain of the Astra significantly better than the eight-speed automatic transmission used before.  We don’t have any details, but the power and range increases could be partially owing to this.

Prices in Germany start from €38,460 for the hatchback and €39,960 for the wagon, so exactly the same as before the refresh.

The current Opel Astra generation has been around since 2021 and has struggled to sell well, especially compared to its direct competitors. Sales in 2025 have barely reached 29,000 units to the current date, while Volkswagen has managed to move 104,100 Golfs over the same period, JATO Dynamics reports.
