Porsche 911 spawns a trio of AWD variants

Porsche has expanded the current 911 lineup with as many as three all-wheel-drive cars: the 911 Carrera 4S Coupe and Convertible, plus the 911 Targa 4S.

All three share the same powertrain composition, which in turn is identical tto that of the RWD 911 Carrera S. A 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six engine sends 480 PS (473 hp / 353 kW) to the wheels through an eight-speed PDK transmission. The company says the torque is distributed with an emphasis on the rear end.

The coupe needs just 3.3 seconds to sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) as long as you pay for the optional Sport Chrono package. It maxes out at 308 km/h (191 mph). As you can see, going from RWD to AWD hasn’t impacted its acceleration and top speed at all.

The main selling point of the 911 Targa S is a transparent dome in the back that accommodates the middle roof section when it is opened. The process is fully automatic and takes around 19 seconds, per Porsche.

While the 911 coupe and convertible are now available with two drivetrain systems to choose from, RWD and AWD, the Targa goes AWD-only. It also has four seats in the cabin by default, just like the convertible, while the coupe has two. Options include matrix LED headlights, a performance exhaust system, torque vectoring control, 911 GTS brakes and a leather interior trim. The Targa is the only one that also gets rear-wheel steering.
