Xiaomi SU7 Ultra sets a Nürburgring record, but there’s a catch

Chinese IT giant-turned-automaker Xiaomi has reported that its all-electric supercar, the SU7 Ultra, has completed a full North Loop run in 6 minutes 46.874 seconds, setting a world record.

From a purely technical view, the tri-motor sedan surpassed the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, the Tesla Model S Plaid and even the Rimac Nevera, the world’s fastest production EV around. The Nevera has a Nürburgring lap time of 7 minutes 5.3 seconds.

However, an important thing to note is that the SU7 Ultra that hit the track was still technically considered a prototype when it attempted the run. We don’t even know how much different it will turn out to be from the production car, which is still in development.

In the meantime, the absolute Nordschleife record among street-legal cars belongs to the Mercedes-AMG One with 6 minutes 29 seconds. And while the SU7 Ultra claimed the title of the fastest sedan on this track this week, it fell short of snatching the prize for the fastest EV prototype. That honor still belongs to the Volkswagen ID.R Coupe, which lapped up the North Loop in 6 minutes 5.336 seconds back in 2019.
