Land Rover admits that the Defender EV isn’t coming soon

If you were looking forward to the electric Land Rover Defender for some reason, find some patience: it’s not coming anytime soon.

According to the automaker, the engineering department stumbled upon serious issues trying to design the SUV. Simply putting batteries and e-motors into the existing D7x chassis wouldn’t be enough, as it would result in suboptimal performance in many aspects, the engineers found.

In other words, Land Rover will have to use a next-generation chassis known as the Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) for the model. This means that there will be no Defender EV in the current generation – not even when the main lineup gets facelifted a couple years in.
