Shelby Cobra movie replica heads to auction

The legendary Shelby Cobra saw the daylight in 1965 and starred in the action movie named Bad Boys three decades later. There were two cars on the set: the one doing stunts ended up a wreck, while the one used only for scenic shots survived. It is now heading to a Mecum auction in mid-January.

There is no price estimate, but one thing to keep in mind is that it’s not an original Cobra, but rather an artfully crafted replica. Commissioned by South Beach Classics, it features a 5.7-liter V8 engine mated to an antiquated three-speed AT. The output is not specified, but the listing claims the Cobra had sat in storage until recently, so it should be in good working order.

If you saw the movie, you may remember this car in a vivid shade of red. It was apparently resprayed in navy blue with white stripes after the shooting was over. Just what chassis it rides on is unclear, but Mecum says it’s a bit bigger than that of the original Cobra, so there should be enough legroom for most drivers. Inside, noteworthy parts include a Nardi Torino steering wheel, a Hurst shifter, and instruments located in the middle of the dash.
