BMW turns on EU over anti-China tariffs

BYD, Geely and SAIC are suing the European Commission over barrier fees it enacted on all EVs imported from China; BMW has joined them now.

This isn’t surprising because Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Directors at BMW, is fiercely opposed to such protectionist measures in the European Union. He believes that free trade and open markets were the very reason the economy of Germany evolved to be the strongest in the EU.

As honorable as Zipse’s cause sounds when phrased like that, there’s no omitting the fact that BMW is importing its Mini electric cars from China. In other words, the Bavarian automaker has a vested interest in getting rid of the tariffs.
