Rivian working on its own self-driving technology

The American EV startup hopes to catch up with the competitors in terms of autonomous driving soon.

Plans for this year include releasing Level 3 self-driving enabled cars that let their owners take their hands off the steering wheel for longer than a few moments. Only Mercedes-Benz cars currently offer similar levels of autonomy on public roads.
In 2026, Rivian hopes to release an autopilot system sophisticated enough to eliminate the need to watch the road most of the time.

On an interesting side note, the company plans to rely solely on video cameras, radars and ultrasonic sensors for its self-driving tech. Just like Tesla, it doesn’t feel that a LiDAR is necessary.
