Rumor: VW Scirocco coming back as an EV

According to anonymous insiders, Volkswagen is actively exploring the idea of returning the Scirocco badge to the lineup. It may end up co-designed with Porsche based on the upcoming Boxster/Cayman EV platform.

The platform is known as the PPE and is said to be rather flexible in size. While the next-gen Cayman and Boxster will most likely be small electric cars, the Scirocco EV could get a stretched version of the same chassis to accommodate a second seat row. It might also end up reshaped from hatchback into coupe.

The sources are also reporting that the new Scirocco is being envisioned in two main versions. The single-motor base spec should get around 300 PS (296 hp / 221 kW), while the flagship spec could utilize dual motors for a combined 400 PS (394 hp / 294 kW) or so. It might get Volkswagen’s usual ‘R’ suffix as a performance car.

Allegedly, VW CEO Thomas Schaefer has yet to approve of the project. If he does, the car could reach the mass market in 2028. By that time, two more Volkswagen Group companies are expected to start using the same platform. Audi plans to release a TT successor based on the PPE, while Cupra hopes to launch a production car based on its DarkRebel Concept.

The Scirocco nameplate appeared in the Volkswagen portfolio as far back as 1974. It was produced until 1992, then made a comeback in 2008 and stayed on the market until 2017.
