McLaren revives its first idea of a street-legal car from the ‘60s

McLaren had been known for decades as a British race car builder, only unleashing its F1 supercar on the public roads in 1992. However, the company had explored the opportunities for adding such a car to its lineup since the 1960s, and will be reminding us of the fact at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The company founder, Bruce McLaren, invented the M6GT coupe in the early sixties. He built three prototypes of it, none of which survived the test of time. The company has now decided to resurrect one using the available blueprints.

On the exterior side of things, the restomod boasts smooth and aerodynamic bodywork atop a chassis sourced from an M6A racer – that was McLaren’s original intention for the production car that never happened.

A 5.7-liter Chevrolet V8 installed in a transaxle fashion sends around 370 PS (365 hp / 272 kW) to the wheels using a five-speed manual transmission. We don’t know how fast the car is, but we might see it in action this weekend.

McLaren said it had no production plans for the M6GT. It will remain a one-off.
