Tesla CyberCab set for production in 2026, may start under $30k

Tesla has held a premiere of its long-anticipated robotaxi, the CyberCab, showing it without external mirrors or steering controls. It also revealed the Robovan, a self-driving minibus of sorts.

The exterior of the CyberCab will not surprise anyone familiar with the EV maker’s other models, specifically the Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck. The headlight strip looks borrowed from the truck, and the body outlines evoke associations with Tesla’s cheapest EVs on the market. At the same time, the car manages to offer butterfly-wing doors that swing open automatically thanks to servomotors and ditches the rear window that its self-driving system has no need for.

The cabin features just two seats separated by a compact-sized armrest. There is a dashboard and an infotainment display, but nothing to steer with. A partition at the back separates the passenger capsule from a spacious trunk. The powertrain specs haven’t been fully revealed, but the company says the car will be chargeable from a wire-free induction charger.

According to Elon Musk, mass-produced CyberCabs will be primarily employed as driverless taxis, but private customers will also be able to buy one for themselves. The production should start in 2026, but – as the Tesla CEO openly admits – his production launch estimates turn out “a tad too optimistic” sometimes. Price-wise, the standard spec is targeting sub-30,000 USD.

No technical parameters have been revealed so far. The same applies to the Robovan, which was present at the event in prototype form. Musk said it would be a driverless shuttle bus of sorts and even invited the participants to have a ride in it, but didn’t say anything specific regarding production prospects.
