Porsche 959 set to fetch $6.5M

One out of 29 examples of the Porsche 959 Sport in existence will cross the auction block on February 28th. With barely any mileage on, experts reckon it could sell for up to $6.5 million.

Porsche produced 292 units of the model number 959 in 1987–1988. With adjustable suspension, a smart AWD system and unique lightweight wheels, it was considered a truly revolutionary car at the time. A 2.8-liter racing engine powered it with 450 PS (444 hp / 331 kW).

The Sport version (see video) was around 100 kilograms, or 220 lbs, lighter than stock thanks to having no AC or audio on board, as well as a simpler non-adjustable suspension setup. It had fabric-trimmed bucket seats in the cabin, as well as four-point safety harnesses.

The model number 959 was never officially sold in North America, but this particular example was bought by an American driver straight from the Porsche factory in Germany in 1988. He told Porsche reps that he had planned to drive the car on his visits to Europe, but ended up selling it after a few weeks.

It is now up for grabs in the USA with just 6,000 km (3,730 miles) or so on the odometer, fully maintained and in perfect working order.
