Renault 4 E-Tech sprouts an AWD version

The subcompact Renault 4 E-Tech SUV debuted last fall as a strictly front-wheel-driven crossover. The company mentioned back then that the AmpR Small platform it was based on had decent off-road capabilities – and has now followed up on that claim by introducing a design study called the Savane 4x4.

The Savane nameplate was worn by some Renault 4 models back in the 1980s. Compared to the stock E-Tech model, the one seen here was redesigned with a 10mm (0.4”) increase in track width and a 15mm (0.6”) boost in ground clearance. New 18-inch wheels were installed with better tires for overlanding.

Perhaps most importantly, the Renault engineering team put an extra motor onto the rear axle. No power or torque numbers have been released yet. The best Renault 4 currently on sale packs 150 PS (148 hp / 110 kW) at the front axle, and rumors claim that the rear motor may be adding as little as 60 PS (59 hp / 44 kW).

On the outside, the CUV rocks a bold-looking front bumper and a fresh green paint job juxtaposed against some gloss-black décor. The interior makes extensive use of textiles – even the dashboard is wrapped in fine modern cloth. This isn’t something you’ll find in a stock Renault 4.

It is unclear whether the company has any actual production plans for this concept.
