Hennessey considers tuning Lamborghinis for a change

The famous Texan tuner and the manufacturer of the Hennessey Venom F5 (see video) is looking into the luxury market occupied by brands like Lamborghini and Porsche.

Speaking in a recent interview, Hennessey CEO and founder John Hennessey admitted having not one, but two Porsches in his garage. He said he loved them and added that he considered Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann his friend. With European supercar owners repeatedly contacting the shop with tuning requests, he started thinking about ways to do just that.

As you’d expect from an undertaking this big, there are a few challenges to overcome first. The market niche of high-end vehicle customization is surprisingly crowded as is. There’s German tuner TechArt producing bespoke Porsches for the rest of the world, and U.S.-based VF Engineering and Underground Racing dealing with the Lambos. All three have rather extreme performance kits in store for these brands, with Underground Racing currently developing a twin-turbo kit for the Lamborghini Revuelto. Once complete, it is expected to deliver 2,000 horsepower (1,500 kilowatts).

What this means is that the final decision will largely depend on whether Hennessey finds a way to offer this market something new and unique. It might have to shift its focus from raw performance upgrades to something different, like giving European cars some American flair. Time will tell; there are no plans just yet.
