A Stewart & Stevenson M1078A1 military truck rebuilt into a spacious and well-equipped motorhome went up on sale in the United Sale the other day with only around 19,300 kilometers (12,000 miles) on the odometer. You’d expect it to have no trouble finding a new owner, but it barely reached $165,000 on Cars & Bids.
The street-legal conversion was carried out by Acela Truck Company. The armored rig’s 7.2-liter, six-cylinder turbo diesel engine was fully preserved, outputting 335 PS (330 hp / 246 kW) and 1,166 Nm (860 lb-ft) of torque to the four wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission. With specs like these, it should be good enough for just about the worst wilderness there is.
As for the living area, it was furnished with a bed for two adults, a kitchen with an induction stove, and a large dedicated bathroom. Amenities on board include a 492-liter (130-gallon) tank for fresh drinking water, a 250-liter (66-gallon) tank for used water, an air conditioner and a central heating system, allowing for prolonged trips away from the civilization.
It’s understandable that not everyone has a spare $165,000 lying around for a high-end camper like this one, but what about you? Would you be willing to pay more for an ex-military truck as your latest escape vehicle? Or is it just too much?
