British government previews ‘new iconic’ EC charger design

The authorities of Great Britain have demonstrated a new charging terminal design for electric cars, which they believe will eventually become every bit as iconic as the British mailbox, taxi cab, or double-decker bus.

The handle of the charger is ring-shaped and lights up white it is ready to use. It changes color to green when you take it out of the holder and changes to light blue when charging. The charger itself is a mix between grey and royal blue, devoid of sharp corners, and adorned with a coat of arms.

As some of you may have guessed, the concept debuted at the COP26 Summit dedicated to environment problems. UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, who drives a Tesla Model 3, was the first to test it in action. He pointed out that the device had an aura of exclusivity and was easy to use. He also said he hoped more people would decide to buy EVs after seeing these stations.

Royal College of Art and PA Consulting designed the charger after receiving a £200,000 state grant. According to PA Consulting Lead Designer Dan Toon, the finished product must be functional, inclusive, wear-resistant, adaptive, affordable and likeable.

The first charging stations like this one should appear on the streets of Great Britain next year, helping the country move forward to de-carbonization.
