Lewis Hamilton: F1 needs more women

The Mercedes team has posted a video starring its multiple F1 winner Lewis Hamilton walking among his racecars and pondering over the past and the future of motorsports. Hamilton puts the emphasis on the need for diversity – which includes making F1 more female-oriented.

Apparently, as the world around us grows increasingly more open and people from different nations and cultures have easier time connecting with each other, the same processes can be observed happening in the Formula racing series as well. However, ethnicities aren’t the only barrier we would benefit from overcoming: gender diversity appears just as important. Lewis says he hopes to see a woman in the championship soon.

The closest women have come to the Formula 1 so far is Tatiana Calderon, who won the Formula 2 Female Driver gold this year, and Jamie Chadwick, who won the first season of the W Series and was accepted into the Williams junior driver lineup.

Hamilton also touched upon the financial difficulties that racing drivers face early on in their careers. He said he wanted to help young drivers by making the F1 more affordable for everyone.
