Erwin Raphael, Chief Operating Officer at Genesis, said the car marque was busy developing a new compact-sized crossover SUV based on the same RWD platform as its G70 sedan/saloon. The car should debut in late 2021 or early 2022.
He added that Genesis would first be releasing the GV80 – a full-size SUV based on the G80 chassis – followed by its smaller counterpart on the G70 platform. The car doesn’t even have an official name yet, but ‘GV70’ sounds like a fairly logical candidate to us.
Unlike the existing sedan/saloon lineup, the two SUVs will most probably only ship with 4WD and automatic transmissions.
As automobile news media learned some time ago, the GV80 will celebrate its premiere before the end of 2019. Once it hits the showrooms, it will mainly have to compete against the Mercedes-Benz GLE and the BMW X5 for customers’ wallets. There will be three engines to choose between: a 3.8-liter naturally aspirated one with 316 horsepower (236 kilowatts), its turbocharged counterpart capable of 370 hp (276 kW), and a 5.0-liter V8 with 426 hp (318 kW).
