A Reddit user has just posted a few pics of car brake pedals that he claims will come in handy when building Formula One racecars.
The man says his company provides 3D modeling services and has recently been tasked with designing ultralight 3D-printed pedals for an F1 racecar. The first pedal prototype turned out weighing just 30 grams (1 ounce) and looking like something crafted out of spider web.
He went on to specify that the brake pedal depicted here uses a combination of titanium, yttrium, hydrogen, nitrogen, aluminum, oxygen, iron, carbon and vanadium. The unique structure enables it to be just as rigid and reliable as its solid-metal counterpart. The production process takes more than 48 hours, and a single prototype costs a whopping $150,000 to produce at this stage.
The man adds that this is just a single test sample, and that the design is far from being final. As such, we shouldn’t expect Formula One teams switching to this pedal design en masse anytime soon.
