Enter Rinspeed Snap, a self-driving automotive miracle from Switzerland

The Switzerland-based car maker Rinspeed has unveiled a most unusual car concept named Snap. With its state-of-the-art self-driving system consisting of numerous sensors and cameras, the vehicle really doesn’t care whether the driver’s seat is occupied or empty.

The one big technological breakthrough is that the car consists of a “Pod” module sitting on a “Skateboard” chassis. Following the philosophy of Rinspeed CEO Frank M. Rinderknecht, advancements of modern technology will inevitably lead to chassis becoming obsolete and being phased out by more modern versions, whereas the same “Pod” can be used over and over again without any major alterations to its design.

Broad wheel rotation angles make the new Rinspeed Snap easily maneuverable – a major advantage for urban driving. Although the car makes only 80 km/h (50 mph) at most, it also isn’t really bad in city environment. Manufacturer promises 100 kilometers travel distance when full.

Propped up on its own supports, the Pod module can even function as a living space independent from the chassis. Developers of Rinspeed Snap suggest a variety of uses for it including a camping van, a transportation van, a kiosk and a mobile office – even though the car showcased at the company’s exhibition booth came with a simple four-seat saloon.
