ACM City One EV coming up with swappable batteries, affordable pricing

Startup firm ACM will attend the IAA Mobility 2021 with a compact and wallet-friendly electric car concept named the City One. Here’s what we know.

ACM was founded in Germany eight years ago based on a government directive. The company is headed by ex-bosses of Audi, BMW and Opel, lending it quite a bit of credibility.

The City One first hit the streets in test mode in 2017, but the design department only finalized its appearance last year. The subcompact car weighs 950 kg (2,095 lbs) and is 3,599 mm (140.5 inches) long, 1,648 mm (64.4 inches) wide and 1,651 mm (64.5 inches) tall.

The interior can accommodate up to five passengers and looks simple and practical. The front panel houses a touch-sensitive center display and some hardware controls.

A 34-PS (34-hp / 25-kW) motor takes the tiny urban ride to a top speed of 110 km/h (68.4 miles per hour). The battery holds up to 24 kilowatt-hours of power and yields up to 240 kilometers (149 miles) of range on a charge. You can either wait 5-8 hours to replenish the juice or simply swap out the battery for a fully charged one at a dedicated station in 3 minutes.

The trunk is rather nice as is at 400 liters (14.1 cubic feet), but fold down the rear bench, and you will get a whopping 1,450 liters (51.2 cubic feet). Rear windows can be replaced with opaque panels, and the 40-inch rear-end display can be configured to show ads.

ACM says the first production units will emerge in two years, but full-scale production won’t begin until 2024. Prices will probably lie within the range of €10,000 – €15,000.
