The Chinese startup company plans to launch sales of its first EV in Europe in August 2020, but in the meantime, it has designed another concept vehicle, named the U6 Ion.
Just like the U5 SUV introduced earlier, the new car uses the chassis called MAS (More Adaptable Structure). It packs a single electric motor that gives it 190 hp (142 kW), 315 Nm (232 lb-ft) of torque, and 400 kilometers (250 miles) of WLTP-rated driving range.
The primary goal behind the design of the U6 Ion was aerodynamic efficiency. The manufacturer claims that the achieved drag ratio of 0.27 Cx is the best in class. The smooth body outlines, the aero kit and the 21-inch wheels all contribute to it.
The cabin looks rather futuristic and features a squared-off steering wheel with the upper part cut off, a 14.6-inch central display, and a 7-inch digital dash screen. There are capsule umbrellas tucked handily into the door pockets, and the gear selector design puts us in mind of motor yacht shifters.
The door handles from inside are loop-shaped like something straight out of professional motorsports, and the dash panel houses a talking robotic head that can listen to you and uphold a conversation. An aerial drone sits parked between the rear seats, and the trunk is spacious enough to fit an electric scooter.
The Aiways U6 Ion has the concept car status right now, and the manufacturer claims its ultimate fate will be determined by how successful the U5 will turn out on the market. The SUV shares quite a lot of tech with the prototype and comes in three trim levels to choose among (Technic, Standard, and Premium). Aiways intends to sell it directly through its official website, foregoing intermediaries such as dealerships. The price hasn’t been firmly set yet, but should be close to €40,000.
