The new Byton SUV: all-electric, autonomous, and smart

As we told in an earlier story, the Chinese startup enterprise Byton demonstrated its first SUV concept of the same name at the International Auto Show in Los-Angeles, U.S.A. late last year.

What we saw back then was some unusual styling, an interior dominated by a giant display, and a power-packed electric engine. Now it turns out that the new SUV has quite a few more tricks up its sleeve than previously expected.

According to Byton CEO Carsten Breitfeld, the series-produced version of the Byton SUV is going to come equipped with a fourth-generation self-drive system. What this means is that the car will be perfectly able to run in the autopilot mode as long as the necessary road conditions are met. Reportedly, this addition won’t affect its price too much, either.

Most importantly, however, the vehicle is going to use the self-drive tech by Aurora – the same company which is currently developing self-drive solutions for such automotive industry giants as Volkswagen and Hyundai.

From the purely technical point of view, the new crossover SUV will be equipped with either a single 272-hp engine, or two engines with 476 hp total output.

The car should have a driving range approaching 500 kilometers (310 miles) and come with a price tag of approx. U.S. $45,000.
