Queen Elizabeth II’s ‘dog car’ goes up on sale

The Daimler Double Six sedan Her Royal Majesty the Queen of Great Britain used to transport her corgis will soon be auctioned off at RM Sotheby’s.

The car arrived at the Buckingham Palace in October 1984 and underwent some customization. First, the two individual back seats were replaced by a single sofa for three corgis. Second, a blue light was added to the mirror, so that bodyguards would be able to tell the car from others in the darkness.

Elizabeth II has only traveled 12,000 miles (19,300 kilometers) total in the Daimler before passing it over to other Royal Family members, who in turn gave it over to the service personnel some time later. The car ultimately returned to its manufacturer after 29,000 miles (46,670 km) of use. Its current owner bought it out in 2010.

As a rule, such cars fetch between £8,000 and £40,000, but the Queen’s Daimler might end up costing the winning bidder a few orders of magnitude more than that.

The offer includes the authentic license plates and a selection of photos depicting Elizabeth II and her dogs next to the car.
