Piloted by Romain Dumas, the all-electric Volkswagen ID.R Concept has claimed another world record as it ascended the 99 Turns raceway in 7 minutes 38.5 seconds.
The talented French racecar driver took the prototype vehicle from 200 to 1,300 meters above sea level (approx. 650 – 4,250 feet, respectively). The entire track is 10.9 kilometers (6.8 miles) long.
The Range Rover Sport SVR was the previous champion of the Tianmen Mountain track with 9 minutes 51 seconds completion time. That record was never officially registered, though.
In its latest iteration, the Volkswagen ID.R incorporates a highly sophisticated aerodynamic system and an all-electric powertrain producing 680 hp (500 kilowatts) alongside 650 Nm (479 pound-feet) of torque. It zaps from zero to 100 km/h in mere 2.2 seconds.
