The British automaker want to double the number of available models in its lineup to two.
Caterham plans to build a closed-cockpit coupe with front engine and rear-wheel drive. It will based on the abandoned C120 concept, which was still on the brand’s wishlist. The previous model, the Caterham 21 convertible, was a commercial failure in the 1990s. Its total sales were 50 models. In fact, now Caterham lineup has only one car - Lotus Seven, that will turn 60 years old next year.
Caterham CEO, Graham MacDonald, says: “We are actively thinking about what is the next step to the Seven. While we love and cherish that, we have to think about the future. It’s important to get the right engine and product for our customers. It has to have Caterham DNA”.
New Caterham sports car will be a more versatile sports car than the Lotus Seven. It would use an engine from another carmaker. Therefore the British brand is now looking for a new partner. “We are talking to Ford and a number of other manufacturers. While the 620 is supercharged, we like naturally aspirated engines”, noted MacDonald.
