A 47-year-old BMW 3 Series nets $75k at an auction

The Bavarian automotive company had faster cars back in 1973 than this BMW 3.0 CS, but the elegant design of the coupe made it a sought-after icon.

This specific example rolled off the assembly line in November 1972 and shipped to New York. It is reported that it had regular maintenance and is still in top driving condition. The jet black body received a fresh paint coat a few decades ago, and stock wheels were swapped out for 16-inch Coupeking alloys sporting Alpina hubcaps and Continental Extreme Contact rubber.

The technical side of things is even more interesting. The coupe draws its power from an M30B35 inline-six mill that debuted with the 635CSi a decade and a half later. Assisting it are a replacement crankshaft, a new camshaft, forged connecting rods, and 10.5:1 ratio pistons. A five-speed manual gearbox uses a low-weight flywheel to send the momentum to the rear end.

Here’s proof that smart and careful tuning has its merits: the car found a new owner for $75,000 a few days ago.
