Video: 5,000-HP Devel Sixteen hypercar runs lap after lap

Remember when Devel announced its intentions to design a clinically insane 5,000-horsepower hypercar around twenty years ago? Well, it started taking pre-orders in 2017 (and is still taking them now), but as today’s video suggests, the production is not happening soon.

In the official footage provided, the Sixteen coupe can be seen testing on racetrack without any kind of forced induction under the hood. Its monstrous 12.3-liter sixteen-cylinder engine remains naturally aspirated for now, but turbocharging it is a prerequisite for hitting the promised power output numbers.

According to Devel, the track projectile will be able to launch itself 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in under two seconds and proceed to a top speed of 560 km/h (348 miles per hour). Even more ambitiously, the company says that 5,000 hp (3,728 kW) is the bare minimum the engineers intend to reach. Should the project succeed, the actual output of the production car might end up being even greater than that.

Devel has other projects in its portfolio, including a tri-axle SUV named Sixty and rated at 700 hp (522 kW). Like the others, though, it remains shelved.
