An exceedingly rare Unimog Type 401 truck assembled seven decades ago and modified by Westfalia is up for grabs at Car and Classic right now, with the best offer at €24,000.
The Type 401 was a post-WWII German vehicle that represented a cross between a tractor and a truck. Produced by Daimler-Benz largely for agricultural use, it shipped with a tarp top that protected the cabin against rain but did nothing to preserve heat, making it virtually unusable in the cold season.
Willing to make the truck more appealing to a wider audience, German firm Westfalia-Werke came up with a custom closed cab for it (see video). Its unusual design earned it the nickname Froschauge, which is German for “Frog-Eye”.
This particular example rolled off the factory line in 1955 packing a 1.7-liter diesel four-pot, a six-speed manual transmission and a two-speed transfer case sending the momentum to all four wheels. With 86,707 km (53,877 miles) on the clock, it is far from new, but the listing says the vehicle is completely restored and functional after a recent electrics and wiring overhaul.
