Volkswagen AG and composer Leslie Mándoki have decided on the optimum soundtrack for its upcoming ID.3 battery hatchback. Hit ‘Play’ to listen.
The EU adopted new legislation in July this year, according to which all car manufacturers are obligated to equip their EVs and electrified hybrids with an audio system to warn cyclists and pedestrians about their approaching. The system is officially called AVAS, which stands for ‘Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System’ and engages whenever you drive faster than 30 km/h (18.6 mph) or reversing. The noise should warn the people around about the otherwise completely silent electric vehicle.
As we said above, Volkswagen AG enlisted the help of well-known Hungarian/German composer Leslie Mándoki to design the fake engine soundtrack for the ID.3. This is far from unique: BMW has struck a similar deal with famous soundtrack composer Hans Zimmer, and Porsche is already selling a ‘motor noise enhancement for its Taycan EV for $580.
