3D renderings of cars by independent designers may be commonplace, but these images of an open-top Volkswagen ID.3 come from VW Brand CEO Ralf Brandstätter himself.
Brandstätter posted the pics on his LinkedIn page, saying that driving an all-electric convertible to the wilderness would bring you an ‘unusual sense of unity with the nature without an ICE engine rumbling in the background’.
It remains to be seen just whether the electric hatchback will be shedding its roof anytime soon. The one thing we know is that the MEB platform the EV comes based on is extremely versatile and should lend itself easily to such a conversion – remember the I.D. Buggy Concept from two years ago?
The way things stand, Volkswagen’s only topless ride on offer right now is the T-Roc Cabriolet, a rather unusual roofless SUV that premiered in Europe in 2019. The sales are fairly modest, with only 11,242 units sold last year.
