VW ID vehicle range gets its first major OTA update

Volkswagen has announced its first major over-the-air software upgrade coming to ID.3 models first, ID.4 next, and the rest of the ID family after that.

Being positioned as an upgrade, the new software will extend existing functionality and bring along new features. Multimedia, ambient lighting and electronic driver aids/assist systems should all benefit from these improvements, although specifics remain unknown.

Going forward, VW plans to update the ID software on a quarterly basis, i.e. once in around three months. Aside from just polishing the existing features, the company pledges to listen to the customers’ feedback and introduce new features based on the number of requests.

Other car brands, such as Ford, Porsche, BMW and Tesla, are already using the OTA approach to keep their software up to date. The list will likely continue to expand until all major carmakers offer similar functionality.
