Volkswagen confirms production plans for a high-end electric hatchback

Volkswagen CEO Ralf Brandstätter announced the coming of the ID.3 GTX, a performance hatchback based on the ID. X concept shown in May.

At the time of debut, the prototype was the German marque’s most powerful EV. It shared the powertrain with the ID.3 (see video), packing dual electric motors jointly rated at 333 PS (328 hp / 245 kW). It needed 5.3 seconds to accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph).

According to Brandstätter, the production car will belong to the GTX lineup, which currently includes the top-spec ID.4 SUV and awaits the coupe-like ID.5 to join it later. It is official, however, that the final mass-market version of the ID.3 GTX will be dialed back a bit in terms of power compared to the concept, so it will no longer be the strongest electric Volkswagen.

While not officially confirmed, the car might end up with the same powertrain as the ID.4 GTX: dual motors exerting 299 PS (295 hp / 220 kW) and 460 Nm (339 lb-ft). Lower curb weight would enable the ID.3 GTX to launch faster than its big brother, which needs 6.2 seconds to get to 100 km/h (62 mph).

The market launch is scheduled for 2022.
