The all-electric Volkswagen ID.4 SUV has made it to the mass market faster than its hatchback cousin, the ID.3, which stumbled upon software issues. After being unveiled last fall, the ID.4 has now started shipping in Germany.
Volkswagen assembles its latest mid-size crossover SUV in Zwickau, offering it in three single-motor / RWD modifications so far. The entry spec is called Pure and has 148 PS (146 hp / 109 kW), 52 kilowatt-hours, and 345 kilometers (214.4 miles) of WLTP-rated range.
Pure Performance has a more powerful 170-PS (168-hp / 125-kW) engine, the same battery size and 343 km (213 miles) of range. The range-topping Pro Performance has 77 kWh of power storage and offers 508 km (315.7 miles) of uninterrupted driving. Prices in Germany vary between €37,000 and €44,450.
VW Europe had amassed around 23,500 pre-orders by the end of February. Sales in China will begin soon, with FAW-VW and SAIC-VW factories set to bring different specifications of the same car to the market. The United States will receive the ID.4 imported from Germany.
Volkswagen aims to have sold 150,000 units by the end of the year, one-third of around 450,000 total EVs. Next in line is the ID.6 model.
