Remember we reported about Volkswagen rebranding itself as ‘Voltswagen’ in North America to emphasize its dedication to electric cars? You don’t? That’s because we did not. Many other news reporters did, though, falling for an obvious early April Fool joke.
The original press release claimed that Volkswagen of America would become ‘Voltswagen of America’ in May this year to leave no one doubting the manufacturer’s intention to electrify its entire range. Company CEO Scott Keogh even assured us that swapping the K out for a T would not prevent the brand from offering class-leading cars worldwide.
As it turned out earlier today, though, the company just felt like celebrating April 1st a bit early while also raising the hype around its newly launched U.S. ID.4 model.
This is not to say the automaker doesn’t pay attention to electrification: in fact, VW Group hopes to be able to offer buyers around 70 pure battery cars by late 2020s.
