Media first learned two years ago that Volkswagen intended to establish a GTX model line for performance-focused EVs. The company confirmed the rumors in early March when it published its development roadmap mentioning an ID.4 GTX model, and has finally come out with details today.
It is now official that there will be a GTX line of powerful electric cars, complete with AWD and their own badges. The new ID.4 in particular will come equipped with a front-axle motor that drivers will be able to keep on at all times (in the so-called Traction mode) or leave for the electronics to turn on and off depending on the demand.
The ID.4 GTX will celebrate its debut on April 28, 2021. It is expected to share much of its technical flavor with the Audi Q4 50 e-tron quattro and the Skoda Enyaq RS iV, likely inheriting the latter’s dual-motor powertrain rated at 306 PS (302 hp / 225 kW) total.
By the early 2030s, Volkswagen wants to raise EVs to 70% of its total car sales in Europe. The standard ID.4, which you can see in the attached video, is already being assembled at one location in Europe and two in China (as ID.4 Crozz and ID.4 X). Production in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States is set to begin next year.
