Volkswagen enters Baja 1000 with a heavily modded ID.4

Volkswagen has cooperated with racing driver Tanner Foust to redesign its all-electric ID.4 SUV for participation in the Baja 1000. The off-road race has already started with Foust piloting the car assisted by Emme Hall.

The scope of changes from the production car is quite drastic: the body weight has been reduced, the interior stripped clean of everything not strictly needed for the race, and the electronic assist systems gone. In return, the hardcore ID.4 boasts reinforced suspension, robust underbody protection and a roll cage.

The ride height is 2” (51mm) higher than normal, and there are new wheels shod in high-profile mud tires.

Follow the news to find out how the German marque’s best-selling electric SUV fares on its excruciating 1,836-kilometer (1,140-mile) long path.
