Volkswagen ID.4 fares so-so at the moose test

The battery SUV only managed to pass the obstacle evasion test at 73 km/h (45.4 mph).

Although the speed was not extreme, the test pilot crew felt stability control interfering with their actions. The electronic oversteering was so insistent sometimes that the car went skidding and ended up perpendicular to the road. This was sharply different from most other tested cars, which tended to understeer in most cases. At 74 km/h (46 mph), the ID.4 failed the moose test every time.

Curiously enough, Dacia Spring – the second most affordable EV in Europe – succeeded at the test at 77 km/h (47.8 mph), barely surpassing even the expensive Tesla Model X. The Romanian soft-roader was prone to skidding, forcing the test pilot to test-drive it until he got used to it. In the end, however, the car showed a very good result.

The Volkswagen ID.4 comes powered by the same MEB platform as the ID.3 hatchback. It measures 4,584 mm long, 1,852 mm wide and 1,636 mm tall. A rear-wheel-drive, single-motor version was the first to hit the market, rated at 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW) and 309 Nm (228 lb-ft) of torque. An 82-kWh battery gave it 402 km (250 miles) of range.
