Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess has posted a detailed post on the economic feasibility of all-electric cars. He used the calculations made by German magazine Autozeitung to prove that an ICE car costs much more to upkeep than an EV.
The original publication comparted pairs of cars, such as VW Tiguan versus ID.4. Diess concluded that the ID.4 was around 30% cheaper to own that the Tiguan. He also found out that the Audi Q4 e-tron was 40% more affordable to drive than the Q5, and Skoda’s Enyaq was 50% more affordable than the Kodiaq. The key takeaway was, predictably enough, that everyone should consider going electric in the near future.
The comparison was largely made between AWD diesel SUVs and their closest battery-powered analogs. For instance, the study found that driving one kilometer in a VW Tiguan costs €0.21, while driving it in an ID.4 costs €0.16. The values are 21 and 15 Eurocents for the two Audis mentioned above, and 25 and 17 Eurocents for the Skodas, respectively.
Diess called upon car fleet owners worldwide to electrify their fleets, and went as far as to openly demonstrate the superiority of VW Group’s electric transports to its own ICE models still on sale.
