Aptera unveils an EV with 1,000 miles / 1,600 km of range

U.S.-based car company Aptera has unveiled an all-electric, two-seat, three-wheel vehicle that can run up to 1,000 miles (1,609 km) on a single battery charge. Low weight and sophisticated aerodynamics both contribute to its high power efficiency, Aptera claims.

The car is droplet-shaped and weighs in at a mere 800 kilograms (1,764 pounds). Its aerodynamic drag is reported to be as low as 0.11 (sic!), which is especially astounding since the company insists that this is a production-ready specimen and not just a concept.

The powertrain of the EV incorporates three motorized wheels each delivering 68 hp (51 kW) to the ground. Depending on the modification, the traction battery may vary in the 40 kWh – 100 kWh range. The most expensive version of the car is reported to be the most power-efficient as well, barely consuming 100 Watt-hours per mile. Charging is possible at any station, not just high-power ones.

Right now, the project requires further investment in the amount of U.S. $2.5 million to continue. Aptera relies on crowdfunding to collect the abovementioned sum. If all goes according to plan, the first three production cars will emerge before the end of 2019.
