Ford Bronco-inspired sports buggy fetches a record $1.9M

Mecum Auctions cashed in big time when it sold the legendary Big Oly buggy from the 1970s. Once owned by multiple rally and even Baja 1000 winner Parnelli Jones, the off-road icon found an anonymous buyer who parted with nearly $1,900,000 USD.

The car rocks a first-gen Ford Bronco exterior, including the bulky frame, the round headlamps and the same radiator grille. However, it is actually not related to the Bronco Mk1 at all, sporting its own chassis and space-frame, as well as a 5.7-liter V8 capable of 390 PS (385 hp / 287 kW).

Experts explain the record-breaking selling price with the glorious past of the model and its numerous upgrades that make it a paragon of proper off-road-focused tuning even by modern standards.
