The recently formed PSA-FCA alliance is going to release its first car – the Alfa Romeo Tonale – in 2022. After the SUV hits the market, all passenger cars produced by both automotive corporations will be based on PSA tech alone.
The more compact cars will utilize the CMP architecture, while the larger ones will benefit from EMP2, the official statement claims. Fiat-Chrysler platforms are now considered to be largely outdated and no longer meeting the production requirements. In contrast, the PSA technical basis is more robust and less cost-intensive.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale will likely be based on the CMP platform of the latest DS 3 Crossback, Opel Corsa, and Peugeot 208 / 2008. On a side note, the 2006 Corsa used to share the architecture with the Alfa Romeo MiTo and Fiat Grande Punto back in the time.
The EMP2 platform emerged in 2013 along with the Citroen C4 Picasso, and later proceeded to spawn numerous Citroen, DS, Opel and Peugeot vehicles.
Large RAM pickup trucks and Jeep SUVs will be allowed to continue the way they were. The Fiat 500 EV, which debuts at the 2020 Geneva IMS, will also become a notable exception to the rule. The development of the city car is almost complete, and moving it to a different basis would be simply not viable.
