Car manufacturer Cupra seems almost ready to begin the production of its first independently-designed vehicle, the Formentor SUV. The car has been recently spotted on the Spanish island of Mallorca, where it ran a series of road tests.
The choice of the location is anything but accidental, since the northeastern tip of the peninsula is called ‘Cap de Formentor’.
The newcomer shares its architecture with the Seat Ateca and comes powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain based on a 1.5 TSI VW engine, an electric motor, and a dual-clutch automatic transmission. It packs 240+ horsepower (180+ kilowatts) and offers around 50 kilometers (31 miles) of all-electric range.
That said, the new SUV will almost certainly also be available with traditional engines, as well as a mild-hybrid powertrain.
In terms of appearance, the Formentor looks pretty dynamic and sporty. Its front fascia sports a design similar to that of the Seat Leon.
The car will most likely ship with an all-digital dashboard and a 10-inch multimedia screen.
Sales start is scheduled for 2020.
