Czinger 21C superhybrid gets updated ahead of launch

Californian startup Czinger Vehicles Inc. has been having trouble showing its first part-electric supercar to potential clients. Since the last year’s Geneva show cancel, the company had to make do with an announcement video. As it turns out now, however, the 21C has received a range of design updates in the meantime.

The new version of the hybrid car houses two seats placed one behind the other and is wider than the original revealed last year at 2,050 mm (6.73 feet). Its wheel arches and side sills are wider than before, and the mirrors are all new as well. The main novelty comes in the form of a reworked body kit consisting of a front splitter, side fins, a rear wing and a rear diffuser. The company claims the new parts produce more downforce than those of the original design.

Things stay stock on the mechanical side, meaning that a proprietary 2.9-liter twin-turbo V8 still sends up to 950 PS (937 hp / 700 kW) along with 746 Nm (550 lb-ft) of torque to the rear wheels through a single-clutch seven-speed semi-auto. The engine is located behind the seats and can rev up to 11,000 RPM.

Two electric motors mounted one per each of the front wheels lift the cumulative output to around 1,250 horsepower (932 kW), but customers can order a version boosted to 1,350 hp (1,007 kW) if they want to.

Getting from zero to sixty miles per hour (97 km/h) takes 1.9 seconds. Doubling that speed takes 8.5 seconds and tripling it 21.3 s. The show car needed 15 seconds to go 0-300-0 km/h (0-186-0 mph), and the latest version allegedly manages the same in just 13.8 seconds. The same stunt with 400 km/h (248 mph) takes 27.1 seconds instead of the previously estimated 29 s. An optional aerodynamic package raises the top speed to 452 km/h (281 mph) instead of the originally promised 432 km/h (268 mph).

A total of 80 hypercars will be built priced from U.S. $1.7 million. The production is set to start later this year. On an interesting side note, Czinger says it is already working on new models.
